The aim of the duty to provide independent advocacy is to enable people who have substantial difficulty in being involved in these local authority processes to be supported in that involvement as fully as possible, and where necessary to be represented by an advocate who speaks on their behalf.

This e-learning course covers all of the key points surrounding Independent Advocacy, providing learners with a sound knowledge of the topic.

This course looks at how the local authority can help people to be involved, to contribute, and sometimes lead or direct the process of care and support, and be involved in the decisions made about them. It also explains how an appropriate individual can be assigned to help with this.

  • Understand what is meant by ‘substantial difficulty’ and the four areas where ‘substantial difficulty’ might be found
  • Know who can be an ‘appropriate individual’, and what an ‘appropriate individual’ is expected to do
  • Learn what knowledge an independent advocate is required to know as well as the roles and responsibilities of the independent advocate
  • Know how independent advocates can be supported

  • The Appropriate Individual
  • The Independent Advocate
