Female genital mutilation (FGM) has been a criminal offence in the UK since 1985. But there’s a growing issue around British children being taken abroad by UK nationals for FGM, something which was additionally outlawed in 2003. The NSPCC estimates there are around 137,000 women and girls affected by FGM in England and Wales.

This course covers everything relating to FGM over four informative modules.

Over 100,000 women in the UK between the ages of 15 and 50 are living with female genital mutilation, or FGM. The devastating effects of this brutal practice can follow those who survive throughout their lives – physically, emotionally, and psychologically. In this course we will look at the different types of FGM, why it happens, the impact on individuals and societies, and how professionals can prevent it happening, and support those affected

The course will increase your understanding of abuse relating to female genital mutilation. It should also help towards reducing any anxiety you may have around carrying out your safeguarding responsibilities when working with or dealing with people who have different belief systems.

In the course you’ll look at the facts and figures around FGM in the UK, attitudes towards FGM and the role of professionals in dealing with the issue.
